Hi,
Have just upgraded Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10 - that came with an simultaneous upgrade of Thunderbird 91.2. From that point I have had problems with Thunderbird and also GeneralSync has stopped working.
I momentarily;y got it working by going into Tbird addons and "Reset connection with General Sync". However, it then stopped and I got General Sync unavailable - not able to establish a connection.
I deleted GeneralSync from addons and went to reinstall and it is not available on the list for Tbird 91/91.2.
Any suggestions other than reinstalling Tbird 78?

I deleted GeneralSync from addons and went to reinstall and it is not available on the list for Tbird 91/91.2.
As the GeneralSync Add-on requires its desktop application to work, it cannot get installed through Thunderbird's built-in add-on browser (I assume that is the "list" you checked). It is instead installed automatically installed when installing the GeneralSync application. Under normal circumstances, you should not remove it (to get the same effect as uninstalling and re-installing, disable the add-on, restart and enable it again).
But don't worry, you can re-install the add-on manually: just follow the steps outlined in the GeneralSync guide.
If re-installing the add-on does not help and you still get an error message about an connection issue, it is likely that you did not yet start GeneralSync. Start GeneralSync manually to ensure it is running, then try again.
Thanks for putting me straight - apologies I should have checked. I reinstalled succesfully and ther Calendar ran through the latest updates - all fine. My computer went to sleep and on restarting I got this error
General Sync will shutdown because of a fatal error.... plus a window of java errors : Key being The systenm tray is not supported on the current platform.
I am sure I can manually restart Gensync in Tbird but I cannot do that every time I get this error (computer sleeps).
Any suggestions?
Just to follow up - there are now pages of errors and eventually I get the message when I try to manually reset the connection: "Thunderbird was not able to establish a connection with GeneralSync. Make sure GeneralSync is installed and running in the background, they try again."
I pressed retry and get: Error: An unexpected error occurred

Hm, there seems to be some issue with your Java installation and your desktop environment. One way to most likely work around this issue would be to disable GeneralSync's tray icon in the advanced settings of GeneralSync (expand the advanced section in the configuration dialog). Note that it will no longer be possible to stop GeneralSync through the graphical user interface while this option is enabled – that is the reason why it is hidden away in the advanced section.
Thanks I could try that. I also forgot to mention that when I close the error window, the Unix terminal opens with the following message: Gtk-Message: 15:48:54.023: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
Not sure what the Canberra ...module is.

That is a part of your operating system, but unlikely to be related to the issue with GeneralSync unless I misunderstood the context in which it occurred.
If disabling the tray icon should not help, please take a moment to record 1. what you did (if possible, write down every single click!) and 2. the exact wording of all error messages you get instead, in order. If the error occurred in Thunderbird, it would additionally be helpful if you could record the last the errors logged into the error console directly after the error occurred (press Ctrl+Shift+J in Thunderbird's main window to open it).
Thanks. The problem I have is that I can never see GeneralSync in the foreground os I cannot access the GeneralSync options you mentioned.
Prior to the Ubuntu 21.10 upgrade GS would start on my computer and load a screen which I minimised and GS ran all the time the computer was on.
I no longer see that on start-up but it now runs when Tbird starts and as I say crashes when the computer is suspended.
Restarting Tbird does not restart GS and in the only way to restart GS is to restart the computer. Grrr.
I do have a log file from Tbird whilst starting up and suspending - has lots of error messages. Do you to look at that - where should I send it?
The error after restart:
Component returned failure code: 0x80470002 (NS_BASE_STREAM_CLOSED) [nsIInputStream.available]" nsresult: "0x80470002 (NS_BASE_STREAM_CLOSED)" location: "JS frame :: jar:file:///---/---/.thunderbird/yx4ru92j.default-release/extensions/generalsync-thunderbird@generalsync.com.xpi!/experiments/tcp/child.js :: readFully :: line 66" data: no] 6 child.js:66:29
Then pages of these errors:

Does that help? Feels like a latest Tbird/Ubuntu21.10 problem
The problem I have is that I can never see GeneralSync in the foreground os I cannot access the GeneralSync options you mentioned.
Even if the tray icon is unavailable, you can access the dashboard by starting GeneralSync again (while it is already running in the background). If that does not work, then there is something preventing GeneralSync from starting correctly – in that case you should get an error message when starting GeneralSync from the Terminal (the last option suggested by the guide).
Once you are in the dashboard, you can also access GeneralSync's system log through the troubleshooting section in the configuration window. Given your error message in Thunderbird (a connection is closed early) it would be interesting to see if/what errors are logged on the other end: enable logging to a file and try connecting Thunderbird again. The log files will be placed in ~/.local/share/GeneralSync. Feel free to send them via email or, if you understand what is relevant, paste the relevant parts into your response here.
To rule out "intentional" problems: do you use any software that is intended to limit applications on your PC from accessing the internet? GeneralSync and Thunderbird use local network connections to communicate with each other, so some security tools/technologies might interfere.
Just to let you know GeneralSync is working but I do not know the reason.
Over the past 2 days there have been updates to Tbird and 1 to Ubuntu 21.10 so maybe that is where the problem lay. I have done nothing other than those upgrades to my system.

Thanks for reporting back. I'm happy to hear the issue has been resolved.
